About the ATI Radeon 8500 Video Card? - Page 3 - Guild Wars Forums

it should have at least 128 mb ram
it should be direct x 9 COMPLIANT (it will use it)

there is a relatively small jump in price for a big jump in performance

and need to know if AGP slot is available

Dont base purchase on most popular ...

Base purchase on your motherboard. Is first place to start. What kind of expansion slots does your motherboard have? AGP? PCI-Express?

After you know that then find price range ... it's wiser to save up over time and get a better card at launch than to cave an buy half ass card now.

Of course the 6600GT is best performer for it's buck $300 CDN new. I'm sure research can find a cheaper price online. Hell a friend of mine got a 6800GT online for just over $100 auction.

But of that list (given you have an AGP slot) I'd have to say 1 or 3... but my brother has same card and it's low end even overclocked.

I won't recommend it ... because if you buy a nvidia 660GT (eVGA, chaintech, or whomever) it will be noticeably better.

I just spent $100 on this..... I hope everything will turn out OK...

I am pretty sure I will have better then if I still had my old one... please tell me everything will be ok....

What I am worried about is the one I have now. The Verto GeForce FX 5500 Video Card, 8x AGP, 128MB DDR. Yeah if that won't be ok... then I will be very sad....

I know its better then I have beefore. I think I had a GeForce MX and it was only 64 MB anyway. according the specs, I will have have more graphic card capacity then the RECCOMENDED!

You'll have to test it but read the faq on the GW site you may not have any problems. If you cant exchange it for another video card then just follow the procedures, and make sure your frame rate isn't set to high. Also be sure to turn off Anti Aliasing. Aside from that hope it all turns out well in the end. You can also OC the card from 400 to 500MHz Memory speed, but OC is never recommended. If your in a store check out

Not just for nVidia but has ATI Radeon and X800 tips too, For any who have an ATI X800 Pro ... it also shows how to jump it to a Radeon XT Platinum. Again this post is strictly my words and cannot be recommended by GWG nor GW. So turn that

One more thing be sure you have DirectX 9.0c and the newest version of the nVidia drivers (Windows 2000/XP version click here to go to nVidia).

here is what it says about your card

I am using a NVidia GeForce FX video card and am having trouble seeing some terrain features.

There is a known issue with NVidia GeForce FX vide cards (GPUs) and driver version 61.77 when the user has changed "Image Settings" to "High performance". Some of the problems include missing terrain. The solution is to change your video settings to "High quality". To do this, follow these instructions: On Windows XP:
Open Display Properties control panel.
Click Settings tab
Click Advanced button
Click GeForce "Version" tab
Select Performance and Quality Settings in left window
In the Global Driver Settings window select Image Settings
Move the slider to the right to "High quality"
The video cards/GPUs that are affected by this problem are:

GeForce FX 5200
GeForce FX 5200 Ultra
GeForce FX 5500
GeForce FX 5700

I hope you have a documentation for your motherboard. Or at least you must know a model name (so you can check motherboard specifications in internet). Also, AGP 2x and AGP 4x-8x aren't compatible (they have different power voltage), so actually you should check if you have PCI, AGP 2x compatible or AGP 4x/8x compatible.

And we're still waiting when you'll tell us about your processor and RAM...

Actually the 2 look quite different. As far as if it is a 2X,4X, or 8X Agp slot you'll have to see the documentation for your motherboard like Ellestar said.

PCI slots are usually beige with one spacer gap.

AGP are usually black/charcoal and hve 2 spacer gaps

I don't know how good my computer is, but any info that any of you can give me through this little bit of information to help me get a step closer to getting the Game and being able to play it would help greatly. (If that even made any since.)

I believe I have a PCI. My Video card is an ATI Technologies Inc. 3D Rage II PCI!

Since the topic is about video cards anyway, would anyone tell me about PCI-Express? I've been a little behind with technology of late.

EDIT: Mate, to know your motherboard, the surest way is to (assuming you are on Windows XP) go to Start > Run > type 'dxdiag' without the ''
The motherboard model is listed under "System Model" and "System Manufacturer" is the brand.
Then, without having to open your computer, all you have to do is google the brand and the mode.

You should have a AGP slot on a Athalon board, though it may only be 2XAGP, see previous submission and have a loog inside. It should be the Top slot (ie close to the CPU)

PCI express is going top be the next type of slot. A lot faster than AGP. Still in development stages, only very expencive board have them right now. But, like anything with computers, it should be standard in about 6 Months.

if you open the computer case you will see several slots in a row 4-6 of them those are the pci slots and you should see the videocard in one of them

if you have AGP there will be an additional slot which is offset from the set of pci slots

depending on the pc you might have a agp slot abd it was cheaper for the maker of your pc to use the pci video card instead of the agp

you have an old thunderbire core processor which should be ok

the ram is probably sdr instead od ddr which is twice as fast and would be short imho

the only thing to do is try it and see if it works and if it does to your satisfaction

You should be fine to run GW once the Video card is in. Though I would suggest getting more RAM. You're probably going to want to buy a new computer in the next year.
This all depends on what you want to use it for. You will not be able to play Half Life 2, or Doom 3 on it though.

Alright, I did what you said, and typed what I was supose to. It brought up a little window with different types of information. It does not show system model, but just system. So, if you want to know something, just post it after mine here, and i'll try and give you the info alright. I do have Windows XP by the way!
